Named after Svein Rosseland - Norwegian astrophysicist (1894-1985).
Rosseland is a lunar impact crater on the far side. It lies less than one crater diameter to the northeast of Carver, and about the same distance to the west of the larger Roche. To the northwest lies the smaller Coblentz. This formation overlies the southern rim of the larger satellite crater Rosseland V. The rim is worn and uneven. (wikipedia entry)
A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
