Schönfeld (Moon)

Named after Eduard Schönfeld - German astronomer (1828-1891).

Schönfeld is a lunar crater that is located just beyond the northwestern limb , on the far side from the Earth. This part of the surface can sometimes be brought into view during periods of favorable libration and illumination, although not much detail can be discerned. This crater is located to the north of Avicenna and the huge walled plain Lorentz. To the northwest lies the crater Rynin and to the northeast is McLaughlin. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
