Nijland (Moon)

Named after Albertus Antonie Nijland - Dutch astronomer (1868-1936).

Nijland is a small impact crater on the far side. This is a isolated crater that is surrounded by impacted surface with smaller craters. The nearest significant crater is Kurchatov to the northeast. More than 100 km the north is a crater chain that runs from the south of Kurchatov towards the west-northwest. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
