Mendeleev (Moon)

Named after Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev - Russian chemist (1834-1907).

Mendeleev is a large lunar impact crater on the far side , as seen from the Earth. The southern rim of this walled plain just crosses the lunar equator. Intruding into the eastern rim is the crater Schuster. Nearly on the opposite side, the smaller Hartmann intrudes into west-southwestern rim. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
