J. Herschel (Moon)

Named after Sir John Frederick William Herschel - British astronomer (1792-1871).

J. Herschel is large lunar crater of the variety termed a walled plain. It is located in the northern part 's surface, and so appears foreshortened when viewed from the Earth. The southeastern rim forms part of the edge of the Mare Frigoris lunar mare. To the northwest is the crater Anaximander. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
