Encke (Moon)

Named after Johann Franz Encke - German mathematician, astronomer (1791-1865).

Encke is a lunar crater on the western edge of the Mare Insularum, to the south-southeast of the crater Kepler. The small crater Kunowsky lies to the east-southeast on the mare. The rim is low and somewhat polygonal in shape. The tiny craterlet Encke N lies across the western rim. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
