Saussure (Moon)

Named after Horace Benedict De Saussure - Swiss geologist (1740-1799).

Saussure is a lunar crater. It is located in the crater-riddled terrain in the southern hemisphere 's near side. Just to the north and nearly attached to the rim is the larger crater Orontius. About a half crater diameter due west is the slightly larger crater Pictet. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
