Pingré (Moon)

Named after Alexandre Guy Pingré - French astronomer (1711-1796).

Pingré is a lunar impact crater that is located near the southwest limb , beyond the large crater Phocylides. It lies to the northwest of the huge walled basin Bailly, and to the east of the smaller Graff. Due to its location, this crater appears foreshortened when viewed from the Earth. The outer rim of this crater has become worn due to minor impacts, leaving the features rounged and irregular. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
