Ashbrook (Moon)

Named after Joseph Ashbrook - American astronomer (1918-1980).

Ashbrook is a large lunar impact crater that is located in the vicinity of the south pole on the far side , and so cannot be viewed directly from the Earth. The eastern face of the crater has been overlain by the similar-sized Drygalski, and more than half the interior floor is covered by the outer ramparts and ejecta of Drygalski. To the northwest is the walled plain Zeeman. The surviving outer rim is worn and eroded by subsequent impacts, although much of the original formation is still visible. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
