Helmert (Moon)

Named after Friedrich Robert Helmert - German astronomer, geodesist (1843-1917).

Helmert is a lunar crater at the southern edge of the Mare Smythii. It lies near the eastern limb , and from the Earth it is seen nearly from the side. The visibility of this feature can be strongly affected by libration in its orbit. This crater forms part of a merged pair with the similar crater Kao on its northern side. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
