Kies (Moon)

Named after Johann Kies - German mathematician, astronomer (1713-1781).

Kies is the remnant of a lunar crater that has been flooded by basaltic lava, leaving only a remnant of the outer rim. It is located in the Mare Nubium almost due south of the crater Bullialdus. Northwest is König. To the south-southwest lies a lunar dome structure designated Kies Pi (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
