Cartan (Moon)

Named after Elie-Joseph Cartan - French mathematician (1869-1951).

Cartan is a small lunar crater near the eastern edge. It lies just to the west of the larger Apollonius. The rim is circular with a tiny crater along the eastern side. The interior floor is about half the diameter of the crater. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
