Beer (Mars)

Named after Wilhelm Beer - German astronomer (1797-1850).

Beer is a crater lying situated within the Margaritifer Sinus quadrangle region of the planet Mars, named in honor of the German astronomer, Wilhelm Beer. When doing so, they selected a particular feature for the prime meridian of their charts. Their choice was strengthened when Giovanni Schiaparelli used the same location in 1877 for his more famous maps of Mars. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On Mars large craters are named after deceased scientists, writers and others who have contributed to the lore of Mars. Small creaters (less than 60km) are named after small towns and villages.
