Vishniac (Mars)

Named after Wolf V. Vishniac - American microbiologist (1922-1974).

Vishniac is the larger crater of the Martian surface feature called the Giant's Footprint. The feature was originally observed by Mariner 7 in 1969. In 1999, the Mars Global Surveyor's Mars Orbiter Camera was able to provide more detailed pictures. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On Mars large craters are named after deceased scientists, writers and others who have contributed to the lore of Mars. Small creaters (less than 60km) are named after small towns and villages.
