Named after Margaret Mead - American anthropologist (1901-1978).

Mead is an impact crater on Venus named in honor of the cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead. Mead crater is the largest impact crater on Venus, with a diameter of 280 km The crater has an inner and an outer ring and a small ejecta blanket surrounding the outer ring. The crater floor looks very similar in morphology to the surrounding plain. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On Venus they are named after deceased women who have made outstanding or fundamental contributions to their field (if over 20 km). If smaller common female first names are used.
