Eminescu (Mercury)

Named after Mihail Eminescu - Romanian poet (1850-1889).

Eminescu is a peak ring crater on Mercury 125 kilometers in diameter. Since there are very few later craters superposed on it, Eminescu appears to be a young crater formed around one billion years ago. It has a transitional morphology. The impact ejecta and chains of secondary craters extend as far as one radius from the rim. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On Mercury they are named after deceased artists, musicians, painters, and authors who have made outstanding or fundamental contributions to their field and have been recognized as art historically significant figures for more than 50 years.
