Solis Lacus (Mars)

"Lake of the Sun"; the so-called "Eye of Mars," connecting East with West.

Solis Lacus is a dark feature on Mars. Solis Lacus is known for the variability of its appearance, changing its size and shape when dust storms occur. Percival Lowell believed that it was the planetary capital of Mars due to the number of canals he claimed intersected at the region. (wikipedia entry)

A albedo feature is an area which shows a contrast in brightness or darkness (albedo) with adjacent areas. On Mars they are named after names from classical mythology assigned by Schiaparelli and Antoniadi.
