Mariotte (Moon)

Named after Edme Mariotte - French physicist (1620-1684).

Mariotte is an elongated crater on the far side. This formation is located about one crater diameter to the southwest of the smaller Das. This crater is longer to the southeast by about an extra 5 km, giving this feature an egg-shaped outline. The outer rim is sharp-edged and little eroded. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
