Weiss (Moon)

Named after Edmund Weiss - German astronomer, mathematician, physicist (1837-1917).

Weiss is a lunar crater along the southern edge of the Mare Nubium. Nearly attached to the southwest rim is the crater Cichus, and Pitatus lies just over one crater diameter to the east-northeast. To the east-southeast lies the eroded Wurzelbauer. The northern rim of this crater has been removed and the interior flooded by lava, leaving a nearly featureless surface. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
