Riccius (Moon)

Named after Augustine Riccius - Italian astronomer (fl. 1513) and Ricci, Matteo Riccius - Italian mathematician, geographer (1552-1610).

Riccius is a lunar crater that is located in the rugged, southeastern part 's near side. It lies within one crater diameter southeast of the crater Rabbi Levi. To the east-northeast is Stiborius and due south is Nicolai. This formation has been so heavily bombarded by subsequent impacts that it is nearly unrecognizable as a crater. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
