Petit (Moon)

Named after Alexis Therese Petit - French physicist (1771-1820).

Not to be confused with Pettit, another lunar crater. Petit is a small, bowl-shaped lunar crater on the northwestern edge of the Mare Spumans. The crater has a prominent ray system. The name is appropriate, since Petit means small in French. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
