Leibnitz (Moon)

Named after Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz - German mathematician, philosopher (1646-1716).

Leibnitz is a huge lunar crater that is located in the southern hemisphere on the far side. This formation is the same size as Clavius on the near side. It is located to the east-southeast of Mare Ingenii, and is joined to the northeast rim of Von Kármán. Attached to the eastern rim is Davisson, and intruding into the southeast rim is Finsen. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
