Chappe (Moon)

Named after d'Auteroche, Jean-Baptiste Chappe - French astronomer (1728-1769).

Chappe is a lunar impact crater that lies along the southwestern limb. It is nearly attached to the northern limb of the walled plain Hausen, and an equal distance from the crater Pilâtre. To the north-northwest is Blanchard. This crater lies along the outer rampart of the much larger Hausen, and is surrounded by uneven, hummocky terrain. (wikipedia entry)

A crater is a circular depression likely created by an impact event. On the Moon they are named after deceased scientists, polar explorers, astronauts or cosmonauts.
